John Bellamy Foster is Professor of Sociology at the University of Oregon in Eugene, USA, where he teaches environmental sociology, social theory, Marxism and political economy and serves as editor of Monthly Review Magazine. Foster was active in the anti-war and environmental movements from a young age. His early research centered on political economy and theories of capitalist development. In the late 1980s, he turned toward issues of ecology, focusing on the relationship between the global environmental crisis and the crisis in the capitalist economy, stressing the imperative for a sustainable, socialist alternative.
Foster has written numerous books, including:
• The Ecological Rift: Capitalism’s War on the Earth (2010)
• The Ecological Revolution: Making Peace with the Planet (2009)
• The Great Financial Crisis: Causes and Consequences (with Fred Magdoff, 2009)
